12 Zodiac Signs And Their Classification

All the planets are located in the Zodiac. This zodiac has been divided into twelve equal parts of 30 degrees, each part of 30° is called a Zodiac Signs(Rashi). They have been named after the famous constellation located there.

The disc rotates on its axis from east to west once a day. This appears to be due to the Earth rotating on its axis once in 24 hours.

Zodiac

In Vedic astrology, Earth is considered the center of the entire universe. That is why the imaginary path of the Sun’s revolution, which is the path of the Earth’s revolution around the Sun, is called ecliptic.

On either side of this 360° ecliptic, there is a total 18-degree strip of 9 degrees each, which is called Zodiac.

There are a total of twelve zodiac signs in the Zodiac.

These 12 signs are shown on the birth chart. The zodiac sign rising in the east is called the first house/first house or ascendant of the birth chart. If counted anticlockwise, the first house is the second house, followed by the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth houses.

Zodiac signs based on the nature of zodiac sign

Based on nature, zodiac signs have been classified as variable, fixed, and dual.

Movable Sign-

Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are movable signs. Char means movable. People whose Ascendant/Moon is in a movable sign like life changes. These people always like to be active. They like to travel. They make decisions quickly.

Fixed Sign-

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are fixed zodiac signs. Achar means stable. People with fixed zodiac signs do not like change very much. They think and act in a certain way. They do not make decisions quickly.

Dual Sign

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are dual-nature zodiac signs. They are intelligent. They like to know and understand new things. They often think so much about right and wrong that they remain in a state of indecision. They are cheerful and are interested in various subjects.

Zodiac signs based on Elements

Based on elements, signs are classified into fire signs, earth signs, air signs, and water signs.

Fire Sign-

People of the fire element sign are active, aggressive, courageous, influential, and powerful, and have good leadership and administrative qualities. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fire element signs.

Earth Sign-

People with earth element signs are practical, down to earth, away from ostentation, work carefully, and have a good understanding of money. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are earth element signs.

Air Sign-

People with air element zodiac signs are intelligent, carefree, happy-go-lucky, social, and enjoy life. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are air element signs.

Water Sign-

People with the water element sign are sensitive, emotional, love-expressive, artistic, nature lovers, and spiritual. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are water element signs.

The Even signs are called the female sign and the odd sign is called the male sign.

The twelve signs are classified into four directions- East, West, North, and South.

Day And Night Sign(Ratri Diwabali Rashi)

Some signs are strong at night and some are strong during the day.

Day sign

Those signs that are strong during the daytime are called Day(Diwabali) zodiac signs. Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces are strong during the daytime.

Night sign

Those zodiac signs that are strong during the night are called night signs. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Sagittarius, and Capricorn are strong at night.

Varna of Zodiac Sign

The twelve zodiac signs are divided into four varnas, Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. Water elements are Brahmin Varna, Fire Sign is Kshatriya Varna, Earth Sign is Vaishya Varna and Air Sign is Shudra Varna.

Biped/Quadruped/Footless/Insect Sign

Human/Biped Sign (Dwipada)

Those signs whose shape is similar to that of a human being come under Dwipada(Human signs) because humans have two legs. Among the Human zodiac signs come Gemini, Libra, Virgo, Aquarius, and the first half of Sagittarius. We know that the human form is formed in the Gemini, Libra, Virgo, and Aquarius, hence these signs come under the biped human zodiac sign.
The first half of Sagittarius zodiac sign is half human and the last half is horse. Hence, only half of the beginning comes in the human sign.

Quadruped Signs(Chatushpada)

The Aries, Taurus, Leo, the first half of Capricorn, and the latter half of the Sagittarius come in the Quadruped signs. The shape of a sheep is formed in Aries, that of a bull in Taurus, that of a lion in Leo, that of a goat in Capricorn, and the latter part of Sagittarius forms the shape of a horse. All these creatures are four-legged. Hence they come in Quadruped signs(Chatushpada).

Footless signs(Apad Rashi)

Pisces is a footless sign because it does not have legs. The latter half of Capricorn is footless.

Insect Sign (Keeta Rashi)

Cancer and Scorpio come in Insect Signs. The shape of Cancer zodiac sign is that of a crab while the shape of Scorpio zodiac sign is that of a scorpion. They have many legs, hence they come in Insect Sign.

Sheershodaya/Prishthodaya Sign

Those signs whose head comes first while rising are called Shirshodaya zodiac signs. Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Aquarius are the ascendant zodiac signs.

Prishthodaya Signs

Those zodiac signs whose rear part comes first while rising are called retrograde zodiac signs. Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, and Capricorn come in the retrograde zodiac signs.

Ubyodya Sign

Those zodiac signs whose rising time is not possible to determine which part of them comes first while rising are called Ubhayodaya zodiac signs. In the shape of Pisces, the two fish are on opposite sides. Therefore it is not possible to say which side is the top. Hence Pisces comes in Ubhayodaya.
